Ballingarry make disappointing exit

Co. SHC Round 2

Co. SHC Round 2

Templederry Kenyons 3-21; Ballingarry 0-10

Ballingarry slumped disappointingly in the second half of the second round of the Clean Ireland Recycling county senior hurling championship at Templemore on Sunday evening as Templederry drove on to record a 20 points win.

Ballingarry were in trouble at half-time as they trailed by four points after playing with the fresh breeze but they had shown commendable spirit in the opening half, and if they maintained the effort after the break and got a break or two, they could still cause an upset.

Certainly such a one-sided finish was not on the cards in the first half. Ballingarry recovered from conceding a 7th minute goal to Templederry’s Tom Ryan to give as good as they got, but when Gearoid Ryan pounced for a second Templederry goal in the 19th minute after good work by Padraig Ryan and Matthew Hogan, things were looking very ominous for the South representatives.

Ballingarry hit three points in the closing minutes of the first half to give them heart but they were 0-9 to 2-7 behind at the break, and the odds were against them.

Ballingarry had the first score of the second half, a Seanie Cahill point from a free, but this was followed by a seven unanswered Templederry points with Gearoid Ryan, Padraig Ryan(Coole), John Kennedy and Mathew Hogan the marksmen.

Trailing by 0-10 to 2-14, the final nail in Ballingarry’s coffin came in the 46th minute when Gearoid Ryan rounded off a fine personal performance which must have impressed county selector Michael Ryan, with Templederry’s third goal, following a pass from Mathew Hogan.
