Fr Sheehy’s made history on Saturday night last in Goatenbridge when they reached their first ever South IHC Final overcoming the challenge of Cahir, 2-17 to 1-12.
Cahir started with the aid of the breeze but it was Fr Sheehys men who set the tempo with some excellent early scores from play and frees with any indiscretions from Cahir punished by Owen Myers’ unerring accuracy from placed balls. Liam O’Connor and midfielders Tom Conway and Sean Flynn were a constant threat. Cahir were reliant on Derek Davis frees and points from Johnny McMahon and Conor Casey to stay in touch. At half time Sheehy’s led 0-11 to 0-7.
Cahir started the second half in much more determined mood and were rewarded with a goal from Paul Touhy to reduce the lead to 2 points and it looked like we had a closer game on our hands. However Sheehy’s again regained the initiative through the work of their backline and midfield whose clearances started to provide scoring opportunities. Midway through the half an Eoin Flynn overhead connection to the net from a long delivery from outfield gave Sheehy’s a cushion they never looked like losing until the end. Another similar goal from Declan English at the death sealed the win.
Fr Sheehy’s go on to meet the winners of the Ballybacon Grange/Kilsheelan semi-final and they can do so with confidence on the back of this display and had outstanding performances on the night from Shane McGrath in goal, John Corbett, Michael Myles, Cian O’Brien, Sean Flynn, Tom Conway, Liam O’Connor, Eoin Flynn and Owen Myers. For Cahir Ger Hally, Aiden Casey, Conor Casey, Paul Touhy, Johnny McMahon and Derek Davis tried hardest.
