James Scanlon pounces to give St. Kieran’s surprise win

1st Round

Fourth Division St. Kieran’s produced a shock in the first round of the Tipperary Cup with a hard-fought victory over Third Division Ballypatrick under the shadow of a windswept and mist-covered Slievenamon last Sunday.

Both teams struggled to make an impression in very inclement conditions. St. Kieran’s drew first blood when Sean O’Neill’s shot found the net. Ballypatrick equalised when Paul Landers ran through the St. Kieran’s defensive cover to place a nice shot into the net. The home side then had another period of pressure that saw Phillip Maunsell add to his good start to the season by hitting a sturdy strike to put Ballypatrick 2-1 ahead just before half-time.

The second half was hard going, as the weather worsened with heavy rain making it slippery underfoot and high winds makings goal-kicks almost impossible. St. Kieran’s made the most of the atrocious conditions prevailing at this time and they deservedly drew level after 55 minutes when a cross into the box saw Shane Ferris head home.

The Cahir team completed the giant-killing act when James Scanlon hit a 30 yard strike that looped over Ballypatrick goalkeeper Mark O’Brien to seal the victory and dump the home side out of the Tipperary Cup.
