“Sheer disappointment” was the over-riding emotion for Brendan Maher, one of Tipp’s star performers, following Sunday’s National Hurling League Final at Nowlan Park.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t win. It was a massive challenge to come down here. We had a poor start, conceding two goals and they were the difference. We’ll have to take the positives from the game and try and build on them, there were negatives there as well and we have to work on those, but we have a number of weeks now to prepare for Limerick.
We weren’t tested the way we wanted to be in our last two games (against Dublin and Galway). It was a ferocious game out there today and we were happy with the way we battled, but we didn’t create goal chances or push on when we got to within a point or 2 of them. We have to try and take the positives from the game and build on them, it’s about moving forward, getting out onto the training field on Tuesday night and working hard”.
He agreed that Lar Corbett would be “a huge loss against Limerick”, with a suspension to follow from his dismissal in the second half of Sunday’s game, but added “the way Eamon (O’Shea) is picking the team it’s the 15 form players who will start. There have been 5 or 6 changes every game and there will be other lads there who are chomping at the bit to get the place.
Obviously it’ll be disappointing for Lar, we’ll see what way the appeal goes, I didn’t see it (the incident). But there will be 15 players in Tipp jerseys going out on June 9 and we’re confident that they’re good enough to be on the field.
Any time you play Kilkenny it will always be a physical battle. We maybe had two goal chances from the whole game. That’s not good enough and we’ll have to work on that”.
