The Clerihan National School team enjoying the fun of the Rugby Blitz at Ard Gaoithe, Clonmel
One Wednesday early last month, over 200 boys and girls from national schools in the Clonmel area attended a touch rugby blitz at Clonmel Rugby Club.
In all 18 teams participated on the day in what was a very enjoyable blitz for all schools. Each team comprised mixed boys and girls in Sixth class.
The children also got a special treat with a visit from Munster rugby players and Tipperary natives, Diarmuid Barron and Brian Gleeson. Children got the opportunity to ask questions about what it’s like to be a professional rugby player.
While the blitz featured many Clonmel RFC players, it also featured mostly students who haven’t played rugby before, making it a great opportunity to try a new sport and to introduce them to the game of rugby, hopefully generating a new interest.
Many teachers commented on how inclusive the day was, giving equal opportunity to both boys and girls to play the game, regardless of their ability.
The blitz was organised by Munster Rugby Development Officer, Joe Sheehan, and Clonmel RFC Minis Coaches.
The participating schools were Powerstown NS, Ss Peter and Paul’s CBS, St Mary’s CBS, Lisronagh NS, Ardfinnan NS, St Oliver’s NS, Clerihan NS, Grange, NS and Gaelscoil Chluain Meala.
Hopefully we will see some of these boys and girls wearing the red jersey of Munster some day.
Well done to all involved.
