A goal at the death by Boherlahan’s Darragh Hickey means the dark cloud of relegation hangs over both of these sides for at least another week.
Just when it looked as though the West Tipp side had secured their senior status for next season, Hickey rattled the net to tie up the scores. Now both sides must do it all again, with the losers facing the daunting prospect of meeting near neighbours Cashel in a do-or-die tie to avoid dropping down a grade for 2014.
Golden/Kilfeacle led 1-9 to 0-9 at half-time with Thomas Burns goaling in the 20th minute following a pass from the best player of the park, Josh Keane.
They had stretched their advantage to five points early in the second half and looked likely winners.
But it was all square again at 1-11 apiece in the 10th minute when Boherlahan’s Brian Maher netted.
Golden nudged ahead again by three and just when it looked as if their mission was accomplished Laurence Hickey picked out Darragh Hickey with a pass and he blasted home. Indeed Darragh Hickey contributed 1-10 of his side’s total on what was a perfect night for hurling in New Inn, even if the standard didn’t quite match the occasion.
Golden may feel they left it behind them; the replay will determine that.
