Newport beat Arravale Rvs in ‘escape of the century’ style after unbelievably three Arravale Rovers players had the chance to tie the game or put the ball into an unguarded net for the winning goal just before the final whistle in the County IHC quarter final.
Conor O’Mahony popped over the opening point for |Newportand set up Padraig Hogan for his side’s second. Rovers opened their account from a sixty five by Paddy Dalton after ‘honeymooner’ Mike Flannery saved from Mikie O’Dwyer.
After five minutes Newport were ahead 0-3 to 0-1 following an Eoin Shinners point. Paddy Dalton kept the Rovers in touch with pointed frees and the sides were level 0-3 apiece after ten minutes.Then came the Newport goal from O’Mahony. Paddy Dalton and Conor Floyd swopped points and an Eoin Shinners point put Newport ahead 1-5 to 0-4 at the end of the first quarter but the sides were deadlocked at the break 1-8 to 0-11
Donagh Leahy pointed the Rovers ahead and following points by Conor Floyd, O’Mahony and Shinners, Newport had restored their lead 1-10 to 0-12. Rovers struck a purple patch,knocking over five unanswered points to lead 0-17 to 1-11. However they failed to score again as Newport tagged on four points to take lead.
In the final action, Darragh Coughlan made a run through the Newport defense, drew the defenders and keeper and put the ball in open space in front of the unmanned goal but the efforts of two Rovers forwards to tie the game or score the winning goal came to nought as the ball was sent wide.
