FAI Junior Cup Preliminary Round
Kilsheelan United 0 – 9 Clonmel Celtic
Clonmel Celtic took their first steps in this year’s instalment of Ireland’s Blue Riband Cup competition with an emphatic, if ultimately facile win against a hapless Kilsheelan Unitedoutfit on Sunday morning.
Celtic opened the scoring inside six minutes when Evan Maguire reacted quickest to a parried save by Kilsheelan’s Steven McGrath, to slot home the game’s first goal. It took till the half hour to increase the lead when Craig Condon bundled a corner kick to the net, and right on half time, Celtic effectively put this game to bed with Maguire’s second of the game, a powerful shot from the edge of the 18 yard box.
The second half turned into a procession and seven minutes into the half Aaron Moroney made it four with a good strike from close in.
Celtic were completely dominant at this stage and only some heroic defending stopped them from adding to the scoreline for almost 20 minutes in the half. But eventually they broke down the home defence again with 12 minutes left as Dwayne Burns cut inside to get the visitors fifth.
This opened the floodgates and in the last ten minutes, a brace of goals from EvanMaguire and Dwayne Burns made the game nine goals to nil at the end.
Clonmel Celtic will no doubt face much tougher opposition on the way to the latter stages of this competition but for now, they are safely in the draw for the next round, and can turn their heads to next weekend’s Munster Champions League challenge.
