GLENGOOLE UNITED 4 KILLENAULE ROVERS 3
(After extra time)
A goal seconds into extra-time by Noel Hayes saw Glengoole United secure a dramatic victory over Killenaule Rovers and in the process secure promotion to League Division 1 for the first time next season, following this Division 2 promotion play-off in Palmers Hill, Cashel last Sunday.
Both sides were fully committed in the most difficult conditions of gale force wind and intermittent heavy showers, which militated against good football. Killenaule, having the advantage of the gale in the first half, were quickly in the ascendency when Andrew Hanley put them ahead from the penalty spot after just 6 minutes. John O’Dwyer made it 2-0 after 25 minutes, a lead they maintained until the interval.
Following the changeover Michael Heffernan had Glengoole back in the game when he was left unmarked to head home a perfectly delivered corner kick. Despite numerous half-chances Glengoole failed to increase their tally due to a combination of wayward shooting, good defending and some excellent saves by the Killenaule ‘keeper. In a rare counter attack Paudie Kennedy secured possession in the Glengoole box and slotted home to make it 3-1 to Killenaule Rovers but slack defending was to be their downfall. With just six minutes remaining Stephen Houlihan secured possession inside the penalty area before shooting past the ‘keeper to reduce the leeway to a single score. With three minutes remaining on the stopwatch a Glengoole free kick was expertly curled into the roof of the net by Stephen Houlihan to bring the side level at 3-3.
The dramatic turn around came seconds into the opening period of extra-time when Noel Hayes slotted the ball into the Killenaule net from an almost impossible angle close to the end-line to make it 4-3. Killenaule were then reduced to ten men following a second yellow card and being a man short they failed to respond, with Glengoole dominating for the remainder to secure Division 1 football for the first time in their history.
