St Michael’s AFC, Tipperary Town, held a celebration night at the Great National Ballykisteen Golf Hotel to pay tribute to the legendary team of 50 years ago that brought the coveted FAI Junior Cup home for the first time, beating Tolka Rovers of Dublin in Tolka Park, Dublin on May 12 1974.

It was a night of triple celebration, as the club also honoured the team that repeated the feat 40 years later in 2014 by winning it again in Dublin, this time at the Aviva Stadium with a memorable victory against Ballynanty Rovers of Limerick.

The third Saints team honoured on the night was the 1994 FAI Youths Cup-winning side that triumphed in the final against Salthill Devon of Galway at Jackman Park, Limerick.

It was a wonderful occasion as the teams reunited and fondly recalled those other great players and club officials now departed who paved the way for all the successes to follow.

The club were also delighted to have in attendance Fr Eugene Everard, members of the MFA (Munster Football Association) and TSDL (Tipperary Southern and District League) and guest speaker John Delaney, who is honorary Life President of St Michael’s.

Stevie O’Donnell was an excellent master of ceremonies.

Music was provided by the delightful Sylvia Cregan and also on display were the three major trophies won this year by the current St Michael’s team, who are continuing the proud tradition set by those never to be forgotten heroes of 1974.
