Tipperary Ladies Gaelic Football

Jim Kennedy Cup Final

Waterford 0-10 Tipperary 0-9

The venue for this game was changed overnight due to Cahir G.A.A field been waterlogged.

The Galtee Rovers club kindly made their facilities in Bansha avaible to the Munster Council.

Waterford played with the wind in the first half which gave them an advantage from the start.

By the 14th minute Waterford had registered four points before Patricia Hickey opened Tipperary’s scoring with a pointed free. Tipperary’s backs were doing quite well against Waterford’s lively forwards turning them over time after time. After twenty minutes the score was 0-7 to 0-2. Tipp’s second point coming from another Hickey free.

Tipperary hit a purple patch and scored three points from play one from Sheelagh Carew, Patricia Hickey and Jennifer Grant. The half time score was Waterford 0-7 Tipperary 0-5. With all to play for in the second Tipperary started very well and Patricia Hickey pointed a close in free after Sheelagh Carew was pulled down going through. A point from play from Sheelagh Carew who was running hard at the Waterford defence brought the teams level. Linda Wall pointed to give the Decies the lead before Ashling Mc Carthy levelled after she was introduced from the subs bench. Tipperary were guilty of missing a number of good scoring chances from both frees and play. Sheelagh Carew, playing a captains part, put Tipp back in front with time running out.

The Tipperary backs who had been playing very well gave away a free at a crucial stage which Michelle Ryan pointed. Straight from the kick out Waterford put the Tipp backs under pressure and succeeded in turning the ball over to gift Elaine Power a free run in to score the winning point right on full time. Waterford will have been pleased to have won a game that had slipped from their grasp and Tipperary will be very disappointed to have lost a game that they had in the bag with three minutes to play.

Full time score Waterford 0-10 Tipperary 0-9.

A spritely 84-year-old Jim Kennedy was present as guest of Munster Council to present the Jim Kennedy Cup to Waterford’s winning Captain Michelle Mc Grath. Enda Mc Donnell newly appointed Munster Ladies Gaelic Football President presented the player of the game to Waterford’s Nora Dunphy.
