Rockwell/Rosegreen are Pa Sheehy Butchers West MFC ‘B’ champions, beating Kickhams 2-13 to 3-5 in the final at Leahy Park, Cashel on Wednesday last.
The combination were on top almost from the start. Centreback Liam Fahey was in control and the midfield pair of Craig O’Connell and Michael Wilson made many incisive runs into their opponents’ half. Midway through the half Jack Tobin fisted a goal following a great run by Michael Wilson. Rockwell/Rosegreen led by 1-7 to 0-0 at the interval.
The combination continued to dominate during the third quarter, adding 1-3 to their tally and appeared to have the game wrapped. But than as if they switched off their effort they allowed Kickhams right back into the game and only score three points to Kickhams 3-4 in the final quarter.
The goals came from Killian Loughman, who had moved out the field, Fionn Hogan and Padraig O’Carroll. Rockwell/Rosegreen had to pull out all the stops to hold the line against a renewed and reinvigorated Kickhams and were happy enough in the end with their five-point victory.
When the final whistle sounded there were joyous scenes for the first victory in this grade for many years. It was significant that selector, Trevor Downey, was on the last Rosegreen team to win.
