Tipperary’s prospects of retaining the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship suffered a blow this week with the news that Brendan Maher, last year’s Young Hurler of the Year, has sustained a suspected broken ankle.

While the full extent of the injury had yet to be revealed up to yesterday (Tuesday) evening, it’s understood that the Borris-Ileigh star fractured a bone in a domestic accident.

If the injury is as bad as it’s feared it could rule him out for up to three months. meaning he would miss the remainder of the National League campaign and the opening championship match against Cork on May 29.

The 22 year-old won All-Ireland senior and U-21 medals as well as an All Star award last year, when he was one of the county’s most influential players. He had also made a strong start to this season, scoring 6 points from midfield in Tipp’s four League matches.
