A dominant last twenty minutes in which they outscored their opponents by 1-5 to 0-2 saw Arravale Rovers pick up the points in this County SFC game at Cahir on Saturday evening last.
Up to that stage Killenaule just about had the upper hand after leading 0-5 to 0-3 at the break. However on the resumption the West side upped their performance and deserved their four points winning margin in the end.
The Tipp Town side haven’t had a competitive outing since the end of May and they looked rusty at times because of it, while Killenaule, recently crowned South senior hurling champions have been concentrating on the sliothar, and it showed too.
Driven on by Kieran Bergin at midfield Killenaule opened the brighter and were 0-4 to 0-2 to the good after 11 minutes with two points each from Tony Doyle and John O’Dwyer.
In the opening half Arravale had only one point from play, courtesy of Timmy Dalton. Their other points coming from a James Hogan free and a 45 from goalkeeper Eric Higgins in the 14th minute.
Michael Doyle had the last score of the opening half, a full ten minutes before the break, when he finished a nice passing movement with a point.
After the interval Arravale improved their workrate and concentration, but with some woeful wides - a total of 11 over the hour - they were still two points adrift of Killenaule after 40 minutes, with Darren Lowry and John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer swopping points.
A cracking goal in the 42nd minute from Stephen Quinn when he gave the Killenaule goalkeeper no chance was the game’s pivotal moment.
Killenaule had their best goal chance soon afterwards when the ball first hit the upright, came back for another effort to hit the post before Gerry Kennedy fly-kicked a point with the goal wide open. With it Killenaule seemed to lose heart.
Brian Jones and Darren Lowry came much more into the game for Rovers towards the end and three excellent points from play in the dying minutes sealed the victory.
With time almost up Killenaule’s Declan Fanning received a straight red from referee Keith O’Brien..
