Olympic Games fever comes to Clonmel on Tuesday morning when a big screen at the Kickham Barracks Plaza will broadcast Clonmel rower Daire Lynch’s participation with Philip Doyle in the Men's Double Sculls semi-final at the Paris Games.
Lynch and Doyle had a comfortable victory in Saturday’s heat to advance to the semi-final.
Their time of 6:13.24 was the fastest over the three heats and they finished almost three seconds ahead of second-placed Spain.
Clonmel’s Mayor Michael Murphy has encouraged everyone to go to the plaza tomorrow for the screening arranged by Tipperary County Council, and show their support for the Irish pair.
He said that Daire Lynch is making Clonmel so proud and that the entire community is cheering him on.
Tomorrow's screening is scheduled for approximately 10.10am.
Despite Spain’s fast start in Saturday’s heat, Lynch wasn’t unduly concerned.
"We always expect the Spanish to go off very hard. Paul (O’Donovan) and Fintan (McCarthy) train with them over in Banyoles too,” he told RTÉ Sport.
"I don’t think we’re ever too worried about what they’re doing because we were going very quick from the start.
“We know what times we do in training and if they were going that speed off the start there’s no way they could have kept it up".
