Things were relatively quiet on the rugby front over the Christmas period with all Clonmel teams taking the welcome opportunity of a break in play to help recharge the batteries and nurture the aching bodies.
After the recent away defeat at the hands of St Mary’s in Limerick, the end of year Munster Junior League table sees Kanturk hold the top spot, followed by Newcastle West, St Marys and Clonmel with nine points separating first and fourth place in the fourteen team division one league.
With eight games played in the campaign to date, the New Year will see Clonmel host Mallow on January 19.
Five games remain in the league, so all concerned will be anxious to keep the pressure on and challenge for position in this highly competitive division.
Win over Cashel
On December 26, our 1st XV played Cashel in a post Christmas friendly fixture.
This was a good opportunity for both sides to keep up the training during the break in competitive action and both teams were liberal in the use of substitutes ensuring all players had a run out on the day.
In the end it was a low scoring affair with a single penalty to Cashel and a single try to Clonmel being the only points on the day.
Thanks to our friends in Cashel for hosting us and the post-match refreshments.
Away to Kilfeacle
This Sunday, January 5, our 1st XV travel to Kilfeacle for the first round of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup.
On the underage front, a big club highlight over the festive season was the honour bestowed on our U11s team to travel to Thomond Park to take on their Shannon counterparts at half-time during the Munster v Connacht RaboPro12 game.
This was a fantastic experience for our young warriors and more so given both Munster and Clonmel came away with the honours on the evening!
Well done to the lads, their coaches and parents for a truly memorable fixture in Thomond Park.
Clonmel 1st XV v Kilfeacle in Kilfeacle on Sunday, January 5th
Clonmel Ladies v Cobh in Clonmel on Sunday, January 12
