St Mary’s Hurling Club
Well done to our intermediate team with their comprehensive win over Fr Sheeys on Sunday last in the opening match of the Group stages of the County Intermediate Championship. The victory was founded on two goals scored early in each half by Luke Moore and Brendan Costello.
All the forwards scored, as well as a seven point contribution from midfielder Seamus Kennedy. What was very significant was that, aside from four frees, all of the 2-21 were from play.
Young Richie Gunne made his debut in the championship at midfield and contributed a point, and minor Eric Walsh came on in the second half. The team played well as a unit and did all that was asked for in an opening championship match.
There won’t be much time to rest on our laurels though, as the next championship match is this Thursday night, May 2 when we play Moyne Templetoughy in Cashel at 7.15. Under 14s
St Marys began their U/14 season with a Feile game against Carrick Swans in Clonmel last week. We started well and were a goal up after five minutes following a free by Sean Kennedy but Swans hit back almost immediately with a goal.
At half time St Marys were three points in arrears. A goal by Swans early in the second half rocked St Marys but heads did not drop and we went on to dominate the second half with all the backs outstanding and Adam Peters and Ryan Lambe dominating at midfield.
Patrick Murchan got a great goal to put just 1 point between the teams going into the final minutes. Sean Kennedy levelled the match with a great point before Carrick took the lead again with a point from a free. A last minute free went narrowly wide for St Mary’s and the one point was what separated the teams in the end with victory going to the Swans.
The lads were competitive throughout and could have won the game but considering the amount of training they have done it was a very commendable performance and it hopefully augurs well for the season ahead. Well done lads, it’s hard to lose by the minimum!
Congratulations to Adam Peters, Sean Kennedy, and Joe Gunne who have made the South Tipperary U/14 squad.
Also congratulations to Commercials U/14s on winning the County Feile Peil na nOg from which they now go on to represent Tipperary in the national finals in Derry in late June. Most of our U/14 panel are also involved with Commercials U/14.
Our U/8s travelled to Thurles, the hotbed of Tipperary hurling, to participate in a blitz there last week, where the opposition consisted of teams like Durlas Og and Roscrea. Our two teams played extremely well and between them won five out of six games.
Well done boys, keep it up!
