Roscrea 22 Birr 22
This match, between two local rivals, had a lack lustre first half, with Birr deservedly leading by 7 points to 0, it really came to life in the 2nd half, with some great scores and some great defending by both terms.
Both teams finished the 80 minutes with 15pts each and so the match had to go to extra time. Both teams added a converted try each to their score and both teams survive to fight another day.
Birr dropped off and had an early chance from a penalty but failed to take it. They dominated for a long time and it took some great tackling from Niall Carey and Carlos Simplico and some great clearances from Daryl Carey and Clive Greene to deny the visitors.
But they kept pressing and scored an excellent try which was converted. Roscrea got back into the game and Joe Treacy made a great break through the centre. Robbie Burns was in support but the number 6 was stopped on the line and the 1st half petered out with Roscrea failing to score. Birr continued to have the better of matters and went further ahead with a penalty early in the 2nd half. Roscrea now decided they would play a bit; Joe Tracey made a great burst from a short penalty.
Michael Tracey and George Sutton drove for the line, with the lather getting in for a try in the left corner. David Abbott was just wide with the conversion but the score seemed to lift Roscrea and after good work by Daryl Carey and Brian O Rourke. Joe Treacy burst over under the posts and with David Abbott adding the Extras Roscrea went into the lead. Eddie O Keefe made a great run form his own 22 to half way. Barry Wallace and Seamus and Michael Tracey carried it on. Daryl Carney put in a great kick into the 22 and the out half kicked an excellent drop goal to increase Roscrea’s lead, but Birr came back strongly and equalised with a try in the right corner. Clive Greene had a chance with the last kick of the match but was short from the half way line. With both teams on 15pts the match went to extra time. Roscrea dropped off and pressed Birr hard and Daryl Carey got in for a try which Clive Greene converted but Birr continued to battle for every ball and had Roscrea defending desperately and eventually got in for 7 pointer after some Roscrea tackling and so both teams were level once again. Neither team could add to their score in the 2nd half of extra time and they will have to meet again. A draw was a fair result as both teams gave everything and gave the spectators a very entertaining match.
