National League. Div. 3 round 1 - Venue Galtee Rovers GAA Club Bansha - Tipperary 4-11 Wexford 0-11: Our Horse and Jockey Hotel sponsored team got their League campaign of to a flying start in Bansha on Sunday last 3rd Feb where they were not troubled by an under strengthen Wexford team.
With 1-2 on the score board inside the first three minutes thanks to a goal from Sheelagh Carew and two pointed frees from Patricia Hickey. Tipperary seemed to take their foot off the accelerator and just go through the motions for the rest of the half. Even when Wexford picked up a yellow card Tipperary still did not push on and put Wexford to the sword.
The Model County to their credit kept battling on and with the Tipp backs fouling in front of goal it helped to keep the score respectable coming up to half time. First half score Tipperary 1-8 to Wexford 0-7.With the wind favouring the Premier girls we expected the flood gates to open but alas this did not happen and the game was played out at a pedestern pace.
More yellow cards followed in this half 2 for Wexford and I for Tipperary. Wexford lost their goalkeeper to yellow after she pulled down a Tipperary forward when through on goal with ten minutes left to play. With Jennifer Grant converting the penalty Wexford seemed to through in the towel and goals from Claire Carroll and Shauna Ryan were soon to follow.
The final score of 4-11 to 0-11 will have pleased Tipp’s management, but the fact that seven of Wexford’s scores came from frees must be a cause for concern.
That our backs and goalkeeper did not concede a goal in our last three games will help to knit them into a solid unit. Twelve wide’s from play is something that can be worked on in training. Both teams were watered and feed in the club house after the game by our hard working catering crew. Thanks to Cecilia Walsh, Patricia Walsh, Biddy Ryan and Olive Mc Donnell.
Next up is an away trip to Longford on Sunday next for a 2 o clock throw in.
