Ulster Bank Divisions 2B League Cashel 20 Points Rainey Old Boys 17 Points: In senior rugby ranks it has been called the “Elusive Fifteen”. No team has had a “clean sheet” of wins in any AIL League since its launch. Ten teams have been in touching distance of perfection in the past decade, Wanderers, who Cashel put to the sword in the Aviva Stadium two weeks ago themselves came very close in 2008,but failed to sign off on the 15-0 score card. The west Limerick club Bruff recorded 14 wins and a draw in the 2007 season in Division 3.
Cashel RFC in their first season as a senior club had so far confounded some pundits to register 14 wins for 14 games. Talent, skill, determination, luck and self belief had brought them to this juncture. So it was to this back drop that Rainey Old Boys pulled up at Spafield on Saturday afternoon to take on the “New Boys” of Division 2B. If they were to record a win over the Tipperary side and results elsewhere in the league were to go their way, a place into he playoffs could be their reward. In good enough conditions underfoot and with a stiff enough wind, this was a tough game that may not have always been easy on the eye but with a raft of injuries and the drain of players due to economic circumstances not with standing the weariness of a long hard fought campaign they again dug deep within themselves to pull off a famous victory to the roars of their loyal supporters.
Well taken tries by Rory O’Connor and Kevin Quinlin and Pat O’Connor’s boot providing two conversions and two penalties. The “Elusive Fifteen” was conquered by the magnificent fifteen. Seven notable lads from the afternoons proceedings need to be mentioned. Niall O’Dwyer, Patrick O’Dwyer, Ricky Lambe, Jack Ryan Con, Tom Dowling, Kevin O’Connor and Dara Crimmins. The “Ball Boys” played a blinder.
Cashel now move up a division again, the bar will be raised but somehow you know this team will up the ante again.
