Thurles Sarsfields 1-21 Drom & Inch 2-15
Thurles Sarsfields won their third County senior hurling title in four years at Semple Stadium on Sunday afternoon last when they staved off a stern challenge from holders Drom-Inch to capture their 32nd crown.
A final which brought the attendance of just shy of 7,000 to their feet on many occasions, this decider will go down as one of the better encounters in years with pulsating passages of play, fantastic scores, high drama and some fabulous defending. Yes, there were many thrills and spills throughout the course of the game with Drom-Inch lads fighting for their lives in the closing stages. And, they could well have a draw, or better, had the Gods smiled approvingly on them – a gild edged Seamus Callanan goal chance going abegging with three minutes to go. A green flag at this stage would have put them one up and racing for the finish line with their noses in front.
It wasn’t to be for them though and the Sarsfields lads managed to wrestle the Dan Breen Cup from their grasp to claim their third title at their neighbours expense since 2005.
This was the third meeting of the clubs in the county final – Sarsfields 10th appearance since 2000, and Drom-Inch’s 5th. And, the fact that Sarsfields had put the defending champions to the sword in their previous two finals gave Drom-Inch an extra added incentive. As well as seeking to defend their crown, they were also hoping to reverse their showcase fortunes against their neighbours. See this weeks Tipperary Star for full report.
