Relegation Final 2012
Upperchurch/Drombane from the Mid Division produced the ‘get out of jail card’ eventually staving off the gallant challenge of West Division representatives Aherlow to retain their Senior Hurling Championship status for 2013 in Holycross on Saturday evening.
With both sides, knowing what defeat would mean, this contest, as one would expect, started causally with many chances going a begging before a goal by an Aherlow side in the 27th minute, had an unusual twist before the final whistle sounded. That goal proved to be a major wake-up call for an Upperchurch side, that were promoted to Senior status in 1998, and from that stage onwards the ‘men from the hills’ took control of affairs turning a single point deficit into a four-points interval lead and onto a 14 points victory.
Aherlow just promoted to the Senior Hurling ranks for the first time in 2011 drew first blood in the 4th minute with a Cathal Dillon free from the halfway line. Upperchurch who missed a number of chances eventually responded with a Paul Ryan free in the 7th minute. Nevertheless, Aherlow restored their lead with a Thomas Hanley score in the 14th minute, but Upperchurch levelled again with their first point from play courtesy of Paul Ryan a minute later. The ‘Church still misfiring in front of goal did open up a two points lead with the Shortt’s, - Owen, and Pat - putting daylight between the sides as the 17th minute was reached.
