OLYMPICS: 1972 SPORT: WEIGHTLIFTING
Frank Rothwell was born on 16 JUN, 1936 at Glenconnor, Clonmel - and at about two years old the family moved to 12 Albert Street, Clonmel where he lived until he moved to England when he was 19.
He attended the Sisters of Charity primary school in Morton Street, and when he was seven he went to St. Mary’s CBS on the Western Road and later Clonmel High School.
As a schoolboy he enjoyed running and won prizes for the 100 and 200 metre races at the school sports.
He also played handball and boxed with St. Mary’s Boxing Club, run by Jimmy Smith. With the boxing he found the physical fitness training was just as enjoyable as being in the boxing ring.
In 1952 when he was 16, he and his friends got interested in bodybuilding and weightlifting, and formed the Clonmel Sandow Barbell Club.
