LEINSTER LEAGUE DIVISION 2 A
Gorey 6 Roscrea 6
It was probably a fair result as both teams had given their all in a match that was spoiled by torrential rain. It appeared that Gorey had decided to play a kicking game because of the conditions but it did not work as the handling and kicking of the Roscrea backs was excellent. Time and time again high up and unders, bouncing and hopping balls were caught and dispatched to safety by Denis Moloney, Aaron Carroll, Peter Queally and Stephen Greene. Gorey full back Stephen Duke opened the scoring in the first few minutes when Roscrea were blown up offside. Incredibly that was to be the only score of the 1st half, which developed in a dogged battle between the packs and a catching and kicking game by the backs but conditions were terrible with pouring rain and a greasy ball.
The Roscrea pack were tremendous and showed a big improvement on their last game. The front row of Terence Kennelly, Enda Harte, and Joseph Maher were particularly effective and there was a great combination between the Carney brothers, David at no. 8 and Daryl at scrum half. The tackling was also very good with Paul McNamara, Willie Maher, Ger Stone and Malachy Maher putting in some big hits. In the second half, the rain continued to pour down and Gorey were straight into the attack but Denis Moloney put in a great clearance and Paul McMamara was up like a flash to put pressure on the Gorey Defender who was penalised. Aaron Carroll was wide from 35 metres but made no mistake two minutes later from the same position to level the match. Roscrea continued to press and Denis Moloney was narrowly wide with an attempted drop goal, but Gorey regained the lead with a penalty from 15 metres.
The rain stopped at last and the game opened up a bit more. Aaron Carroll , Denis Moloney and Paul McNamara put in some great runs and Gorey were stretched . Terence Kenneally showed some great skill to flip a ball behind his back to Aaron Carroll who laid it off to Paul McNamara. Malachy Maher, Daryl Carney was up in support but the Gorey defence held firm, but Roscrea did get a penalty and Aaron Carroll levelled the match.
The last tem minutes were fairly hectic with both teams going all out for victory but the defences were on top and both teams had to rely on penalties. Gorey had a chance with just minutes to go but Stephen Duke pushed his kick wide. Roscrea got back into the Gorey half and a powerful Roscrea surge in the scrum had Gorey in all sorts of trouble and forced them to concede a penalty. Aaron Carroll had a chance to win the match. He hit the ball but it flew just wide from 35 metres and so the match ended in a draw which was perhaps the fairest result.
