LIT Thurles could get three new playing fields, provided an application sent to North Tipp County Council is approved. The proposed development includes two GAA-sized grass pitches, one artificial mutlifunctional sport area, a running path, floodlights, and changing facilities.
According to Ciaran Lynch of LIT Thurles’ Development Office, the all weather pitch will be large enough to accommodate full-sized GAA games, and completely floodlit.
“The pitch can accommodate GAA across, and the width can be used for games that require a smaller area such as soccer and hockey”.
The application was received by North Tipp County Council on 30 May, and provides for landscaping, fencing, and 21 additional parking spaces to LIT’s Thurles’ current campus. Mr. Lynch acknowledged that up to now, the institute has relied on surrounding facilities, and are particularly grateful to local clubs such as Durlas Og and Thurles Sarsfields , who have provided LIT Thurles’ competitive teams with a home venue over the years.
The Institute has intended to develop its own Thurles sports facilities for at least six years, though their formal amalgamation with LIT last September has accelerated the process. The introduction of courses that study sport from an academic perspective added to the need for the development. Ciaran Lynch said that “The BSc in Sports Strength and Conditioning is a relatively new and very successful course at LIT Thurles, and is another reason why we require these new facilities”.
Ciaran says that the new facilities will be beneficial not only to students, but to all of Thurles, and is hopeful “that the local community will use the facilities also”.
