North Tipperary Junior B Hurling Final

Templederry Kenyons 0-16 Ballina 1-10

Templederry Kenyons captured the North Junior B hurling title for the fifth time overcoming Ballina in Newport on Saturday afternoon. Played in blustery conditions on an immaculate surface, this game failed to ignite until the final moments as Ballina went in search of an equaliser.

Pio Kennedy played a captains part for Templederry at the back while John Kennedy, Ronan Kinnane, Donal McGrath and Cathal Ryan wer to the fore in attack picking off some super points. Ballina were well served by Aidan Hanley, Ger Coonan and Padraig Sheehy but just had to give way to a hungrier Templederry side on the day.

The game was only 30 seconds old when a speculative ball from Padraig Sheehy wasn’t cleared and Ger Coonan shot to the net for Ballina. Templederry fought back and by the 14th minute had levelled the game 0-5 to 1-2. The Kenyons took the lead for the first time in the 18th minute but Ballina finished the half stronger and, even with some wayward shooting, scored four on the trot to lead 1-6 to 0-6 at the break.

Wind assisted, Templederry opened in style on the resumption with five unanswered points from Donal McGrath (0-3), Ronan Kinnane and Cathal Ryan with the first of his four second half points to take a two point lead 0-11 to 1-6. Ballina failed to score until the 44th minute when Padraig Sheehy converted a free. In the 50th minute Donie Kennedy and John Kennedy combined to set Cathal Ryan up for an inspirational point and it was tit for tat for the next six minutes after which Templederry held a slender lead 0-14 to 1-10.

With Ballina throwing everything into their quest for the equalising score, Cathal Ryan brought relief with a super point from the right wing in the 60th minute and the issue was settled when John Kennedy was fouled en route to goal and Donal McGrath tapped over the resultant free for a three point win for Templederry.
