For a variety of reasons I was unable to be any more involved in the Nowlan Park spectacle last Saturday night than to be kept in touch by text of the latest score. So on Sunday morning, bright & early I reviewed the recording starting with a heavy heart but my sense of well being & pride was much better after completing the painful task.
My abiding impression of the game, with the obvious sense of loss at going out in July, was one of a team who fought the good fight in their opponent’s back yard for the second time this year & came up just short. The defensive effort on both occasions was heroic & having lost the year’s three most important engagements by three points each time that modern term “three is the magic number” somehow rang hollow for me. From midfield up we definitely had chances & lacking Lar for forty of the seventy odd minutes surely cost us the few extra scores which would have saved our season.
I am not suggesting he could single handedly win the game but along with any scores he would get the attention his presence would have attracted would surely have given others more room. Our other veteran hero Eoin Kelly can hardly have believed his bad luck when having struck with venom & forced the Kilkenny custodian on to his backside in anticipation of the unstoppable shot he finds a despairing Kilkenny arm deflecting the goal bound effort to safety.
We needed a break but the Gods decided we were to have none this unlucky 2013!!! Criticism is sometimes unwarranted & I believe this is one of those occasions. We need to look forward & tend to the young talent we have coming up as the heroes who have fought many a good fight for the Premier over the last five or six seasons & been the most persistent challengers to the powerful neighbours can only carry the burden so far & need assistance now. For those years a sincere word of thanks & lets now look forward with hope & pride in the Blue & Gold.
