Santa comes early with silverware for Clonmel Ladies Hockey Club

Division 5:

Clonmel 1

Cork Wanderers 0

Visits to Cork are normally of the shopping variety but it was a tense morning in Church of Ireland’s grounds recently for the Munster Division 5/6 cup final. Boosted by the confidence of a number of recent wins, Clonmel “gave it holly” and had plenty of chances on goal, for which their efforts were duly rewarded a nailbiting two minutes from time. Monica Ryan dived to save the ball going wide, quickly passing it to Aisling Fanning, who got the all-important touch into goal. Wanderers were left wondering what they could do and put in a spirited last minute attack but it was Clonmel who get to put their names on the cup, which was last won by them in the 2005/06 season. Many thanks to O’Keeffe’s and Eldons who supported the celebrations.

Division 3:

Clonmel 1 Dungarvan 0

Clonmel rose to the challenge to play grit-pitch hosts Dungarvan in the May Costley Cup/Irish Hockey Challenge quarter-final. While the pine needle-covered pitch sometimes got the better of the players, Clonmel stuck to their game plan and kept the team fresh by regularly rolling on subs in the midfield. Ball control was difficult on the uneven surface but a steady performance was displayed by all, including Eileen O’Donnell and Clonmel (but living in Dungarvan!) left back Pamela Corcoran. With a 0-0 scoreline at full time, the match entered the dreaded extra time and both teams went in pursuit of the golden goal.

Five minutes in an intuitive pass by Leanne Fogarty from the 23 metre line allowed Jacqui Stokes to sprint up the right wing and bury the ball in Dungarvan’s goal. Celebrations continued on the pitch for some time, as it was a moral victory for the Clonmel who were beaten by Dungarvan on the same pitch last year in the semi-finals. Clonmel now progress now to the All Ireland semi-final away to Kilkenny on 18th February.
