Clonmel Credit Union Premier League
CLONMEL TOWN 1 PEAKE VILLA 0
Another Tony Scully penalty three minutes from full-time proved decisive as Clonmel Town picked up maximum Premier League points after getting the better of Peake Villa at the Dr. Pat O’Callaghan Complex, Clonmel last Sunday.
Both teams were understrength, missing several first team regulars. Town had the majority of the possession in the opening half but lacked composure in the final third of the pitch. Villa offered very little going forward and at half-time it came as no surprise the game remained scoreless.
As the second half began the weather conditions deteriorated, resulting in a very slippery surface. Villa opened brightly and the hosts had to rely on stand-in ‘keeper Paul Shanahan on two occasions to pull off good saves. The Thurles side thought they had scored in the 52nd minute from a corner kick that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out to safety, much to Town’s relief. As Town pushed on Levi Whelan had a free kick saved in the 72nd minute. Their best chance came in the 83rd minute when David McGrath’s fine turn and shot was parried by the visitors’ goalie and Jason Coffey headed wide from the rebound.
However four minutes later in an energy-sapping contest Town got winning goal. An excellent diagonal pass from Tony Scully found David McGrath in the area, who was fouled as he brought the ball under control. From the resultant penalty Tony Scully scored to keep Town’s championship aspirations very much alive.
