An inter-pubs/firms recreational hurling tournament is an exciting new feature of the Thurles Sarsfields International Hurling Festival which will be held on Munster hurling final weekend, July 12th and 13th.
The GAA recently introduced the Caman Abu concept, which is akin to tag-rugby, and designed to enable men and women, who have never played hurling, or whose hurling days are behind them, to take part in hurling games. Special hurleys and balls are used, with the emphasis on injury avoidance. There is also a smaller playing area, specific rules making for minimal contact, and specially designed goals. Teams are made up of ten per panel, of whom a minimum of three must be ladies or men. The teams are 7-a-side, and at all times during games there must be at least two ladies or two men on each team.
Pubs and businesses are invited to take part and the committee has had meetings with publicans who are very enthusiastic about the idea. Full details area available from Andy Ryan(087-9090985) or Jamie Barrett(087-7771089) who are organising the tournament on behalf of the Festival Committee.
Andy explained – We hope to have about sixteen teams taking part and we will play-off the preliminary rounds in the days leading up to the festival so that the semi-finals and final can be played on Friday July 12th, the opening day of the festival. We think this will be great “craic” for all who take part and we would love to see some “celebrity” players.”
