It's all systems go now as Mooreabbey Milers AC prepare for the second annual Cahir Downhill Half Marathon. The club was joined by sponsors, supporters and our charity partners in Cahir House Hotel last Wednesday 13th for the launch of the race.
Guest speakers at the launch were Damien Holian, chairperson of Mooreabbey Milers AC, Claire Whelan, assistant manager of Cahir Credit Union, Wendy Costello of iCAN and Cllr. Andy Moloney. We were delighted to also be joined by John Cummins of Cummins' Financial Services and John Quirke of Quirke's Jewellers.
We hope to recapture the festival atmosphere that was enjoyed by almost 400 runners, family, friends and supporters in 2015. Registration can be done online through itsyourrace.com and costs €40. This price includes registration fee, shuttle bus to the start, high quality technical t-shirt, fresh fruit from The Apple Farm and a two course meal. Chair Physiotherapy will also be on hand at the finish line.
The route takes runners along the old Dublin road from Kilbehenny in county Limerick to Cahir in county Tipperary. 70 meters in height is lost from the start to the finish, making this technically a downhill route. The course is mostly flat with a few minor pulls. Runners can enjoy views of the Galtee mountains to their left and the Knockmealdowns to their right as they run the 13.1 miles to the historic town of Cahir, finishing at the very impressive Cahir Castle.
Mooreabbey Milers AC are delighted to again have the children's arthritis charity iCAN on board as our charity partner for the event. 50% of profits from the Cahir Downhill Half Marathon will be donated to the charity which provides invaluable help and support to children with arthritis in Ireland. Last year €1,987 was donated following the race so thanks to all
The club is running a competition on the Facebook event page with one free race entry up for grabs. We are looking for suggestions for a slogan for the back of the race t-shirts. Best one wins. Last year's slogan read "It's all downhill from here!". Check out the Cahir Downhill Half Marathon page and post your suggestion to be in with a chance to win.
Three club members competed in the county senior road championships in Dundrum last Sunday 17th. Tom Blackburn and Willie O'Donoghue ran well in the very competitive men's 10k race. Mary-Louise Ryan ran an excellent race in the lady's 5k race to cross the line in second place. Congratulations go to all three.
Best wishes go to all club members running in the final race of the MMRA Sunday League this coming weekend. Mooreabbey Milers members will travel to Killarney to take on the mighty Mangerton mountain's 10k route. The winners of the league will be decided on the mountain, where it counts.
