Good start for Tipp's PadraigMcCarthy in Olympics Eventing

Tipperary rider Padraig McCarthy got off to a hugely impressive start to his Olympics bid in Rio.

The Grangemockler man scored 46.80 in his first round of the Three Day Eventing in Brazl.

It was a great start in the highly competitive event and puts McCarthy and the Irish team in a healthy position at the end of the first day.

He later tweeted that the Irish team are there to compete for medals.

There is confirmation yet on Michael O'Reilly's fate at the games. The Clonmel-born boxer has been provisionally suspended following a failed drugs test but he is expected to appeal the decision.

Thurles showjumper Greg Broderick will launchh his Olympics bid later this week when the showjumping begins.
