Tipperary heartbreak as footballers lose out narrowly on promotion

Conor Sweeney had another great game for Tipperary.

Tipperary fooballers lost on on promotion in heartbreaking fashion when losing to a last minute point to Cavan in Kingspan Breffni, 0-17 to 2-10.

Cavan now join Roscommon in Division 1 next season but for Tipperary it was so near and yet so far.

A Liam McGrath goal and a Conor Sweeney point put Tipperary four points up in the second half and were playing well enough to suggest a famous win was on the cards but they failed to close it out and Cavan  came back strongly to first draw level and then seal the win with an injury time point from Conor Madden.

It was a battling performance from Tipperary in the face of adversity. In the first half they lost Bill Maher to injury and Liam Casey to a red card but they more than matched their hosts.

Tipp led 1-5 to 0-6 at half time with the goal from a Conor Sweeney penalty. Cavan improved in the second half but the second Tipp goal from McGrath gave Tipp great impetus but they couldn’t build on it and leftd good chances behind them.

Still it was a superb campaign for Tipperary that bodes well for the championship and to be challenging for promotion to the top flight on their return to Division 2 is testament to the effort put in by the entires squad and management.
