Clonmel swimmer wins National gold in UL

Killian Whelan, National Community Games Champion Boys U-12 50m Breaststroke, receiving his Gold Medal for Tipperary.

A total of 3,656 young people from all corners of Ireland travelled to the University of Limerick last weekend to take part in the first weekend of the Aldi Community Games National Finals where competitors   from Tipperary enjoyed considerable success winning a total of 3 Gold, 7 Silver, 6 Bronze and 3 Pewter medals in various events

One of the highlights of the weekend was young Killian Whelan, Powerstown, Clonmel, giving an amazing performance to win a gold medal in u12 breaststroke swimming on a day described by his family “as one they would never forget”.  Swimming is the most competitive event on the programme and becoming a national champion is something special.

Former community games competitor and superstar Paul O’Connell paid a visit to the games on Saturday to present medals in his favourite sport as a child “Swimming”.

It was also a memorable weekend for the Carew sisters from Lattin Cullen who have a super record in Model Making / Art  and they added to their collection when Aine Carew won Gold in the u14 event and Leah won silver u16.  Well done girls.

Cashel Rosegreen u13 Indoor Soccer team had an 8-2 victory over Longford in their semi final but Donegal  deprived them of the National title.  However runners up in an All Ireland final is a great achievement.

Delight for the Murray siblings once again

The Murray family from Ballingarry once again displayed their talent as artists with all three siblings Hannah, Colin and Kieran winning bronze medals.  Their older sister Emma was part of the girls marathon team along with Lucy Murphy, Cashel and Rosie O’Flaherty, Powerstown.

Eight year-old Niall Fitzgerald from Boherlahan was brilliant winning a bronze in u12 solo music – 4 years under the age limit. Well done Niall.

Lauren Duggan from Nenagh was fantastic in the pool winning a silver medal under 8.
