Nine Tipperary players have been nominated for a place on the prestigious Bord Gáis Energy under-21 hurling team of the year - Munster champions Cork dominate the 45-man shortlist (earning eleven nominations in total) despite the fact that the Premier County were crowned All-Ireland champions. Strangely, there is no place among the team of the year nominees for Tipperary captain Colin English. The under-21 player of the year nominees have also been announced with Tipperary’s Ger Browne and Jake Morris battling it out with Fintan Burke (Galway) and Cork’s Mark Coleman for the accolade.
The Tipperary nominees read as follows: Barry Hogan (Kiladangan), Brian McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney), Killian O’Dwyer (Killenaule), Robert Byrne (Portroe), Dillon Quirke (Clonoulty-Rossmore), Ger Browne (Knockavilla Kickhams), Jerome Cahill (Kilruane MacDonagh's), Jake Morris (Nenagh Éire Óg) and Mark Kehoe (Kilsheelan-Kilcash).
The nominees were selected by the following panel of judges: Ger Cunningham (Cork), Joe Canning (Galway), Ken McGrath (Waterford) and TG4’s Micheál Ó Domhnaill.
The Bord Gáis Energy under-21 hurling team of the year and player of the year will be announced on Wednesday, October 17th - the winners will receive their awards on Friday, October 19th.
