Munster’s First Ladies - Bridget Shelley (Inter) Mary Murray (Rocklodge) Mark Keohane (PPUI) Sive Shelley (Junior ).
The Munster Strokeplay finals took place at Lakeside last weekend with the host club going away with a seven medal haul.
Saturday saw the Intermediate Gents and all Ladies grades in action.
Paul Shoer Jnr was prominent for a long time in the Inter grade but a puncture two miles from home derailed his challenge. Over to the Ladies in the afternoon and once again they showed us the way. The Aunty/Niece combo were at it again as Sive Shelley held off the challenge of National Matchplay champion Elaine Quinn to claim Gold in the Junior while Aunty Bridget did the same to Mary Quinn to capture the Intermediate title. Martha O'Brien claimed bronze in the Senior grade. Good to see Lily back in competitive action following an injury lay-off.
Sunday saw the Junior and Senior men battle it out and what a great day’s play we had. Following the opening 36 holes in the Junior grade our own Mark Cahill and Fermoy’s Dylan Seymour were tied on 4 under par. After 54 holes they were tied on 7 under par which necessitated a nine-hole play off. As you guessed after 63 holes they were still tied on 8 under par. Sudden death. 64th halved. 65th halved. But alas for the home crowd Seymour eventually triumphed with a par on the 66th.
Michael Fennell failed to qualify for the Senior grade final at Riverdale a few weeks back but due to a clerical error the field was short a jockey and Michael gladly agreed to remount. How close he came. Just 3 strokes behind after his opening 36 holes a horror pitch on the opening hole of his final 18 saw him begin with a double-bogey and his race looked over. He recovered well however to finish on 18 under, just two strokes behind the eventual winner - Kieran Earls of Parteen.
The club would like to say a big thanks to all the volunteers who put their shoulder to the wheel during the last few weeks to get the course ready.
On the local front the Greys Matchplay, Templemore Jewellers Strokeplay and the team event are all ongoing while the Dom Brosnan Memorial takes place this Thursday at 7pm. Draw for teams at 6.45pm. Please note this competition is open to the public so if you fancy hitting a few balls we'd be delighted to have you. Tay and sangwidges after.
