The Thurles Sarsfields clubman joins an illustrious list of Thurles Sarsfields hurlers who captained Tipperary to glory in an All-Ireland final, joining the likes of Jimmy Doyle, Tony Wall, Mick Murphy, Jimmy Lanigan, John Joe Callinan, Tom Semple, Jim Stapleton and his grand-uncle John Maher, who captained Tipperary to All-Ireland victory in 1945.

In 2022, Ronan followed in the footsteps of his brother, the great Pádraic Maher, when he was first selected to captain the team for the year.
With Tipperary’s victory over Cork on July 20, Maher became the first Tipperary captain from Thurles Sarsfields to lead the county to All-Ireland victory since Jimmy Doyle and his team’s 2-16 to 0-10 win over Wexford in the 1965 All-Ireland Final.
