A story inspired by Tipperary's mining soldiers of World War 1

A scene from Way Down Underground

On Sunday, January 11th, audiences are invited to Derrynaflan Theatre, The Horse and Jockey Hotel outside Thurles for the return of Way Down Underground, with a powerful new production that shines a light on the tough decisions facing all people in a time of war.

Blending theatre, music, and video, the show takes audiences deep into the world of the early 1900s, when men laboured underground for the sake of their families. Though rooted in Slieveardagh’s past, this is a story repeated in countless communities and workplaces — the struggle, pride, and resilience of the working man.

Following the success of the previous sold-out show in the same venue in August, and having already sold out the Saturday night's performance, this new version expands the story even further. While you’ll recognise the heart of the story and the musical landscape, this production brings fresh twists and new moments about the brave men and women who endured the harsh life of coalmining, only to face even tougher decisions as the continent moved towards the Great War.

The production features hugely talented local actors with huge experience and compassion for their roles, with the music and songs being powered by members of the wonderful Horse and Jockey Singers.

On the night, new songs such as When You Were Sweet Sixteen will intertwine with previous favourites like Working Man and Sixteen Tons, creating an even richer musical tapestry that deepens the emotional journey.

Whether you’ve seen the show before or this is your first time, this updated production offers something truly special — and with demand expected to be high, early booking is strongly recommended.

We look forward to taking to the stage at the Horse & Jockey Hotel on Sunday, 11th January 2026 at 7pm.

Tickets cost €20 and are available via the Way Down Underground Facebook page or by texting 086 196 0157 to reserve.
