Three new streets with active travel walking and cycling infrastructure are proposed in Tipperary Town under the latest proposals put forward by the team designing the upgrade of the N24 route between Cahir and Limerick Junction.
The road corridors for the proposed new streets are part of the second Design Update for the major road project and have been devised following geotechnical investigations, topographical and environmental surveys and landowner engagement.
The designers propose creating a new Brodeen Street linking St Michael’s Avenue with the N74 Cashel Road at Brodeen and an extension to Lake Road that will include an active travel link route from it to Rosanna Road.
And they propose a new Knockanrawley Street that will connect the N74 Cashel Road to a new junction on the Bansha side of the N24 on the edge of town. It will pass by the Knockanrawley neighbourhood of the town.
Tipperary County Council says the purpose of the new streets is to divert traffic away from Main Street.
It points out that these streets along with measures such as signalisation at key junctions in the town and signalised pedestrian crossings will create a more attractive environment for people living and working in the centre of Tipperary Town.
In the Bansha area, there are some changes to the 100m road corridor proposed for the new N24 route that will bypass the village. The N24 designers propose to construct cycling and pedestrian infrastructure along the old N24 route on the Cahir side of the village.
Another active travel corridor for walkers and cyclists is proposed along the existing N24 between near Toreen and Ballydrehid.
Minor changes to the new N24 route corridor are also proposed for the bypasses of Monard and Oola. Active travel corridors, signalised junctions and pedestrian crossings are proposed for both villages as well as Limerick Junction.
The N24 design team is currently seeking the public’s views on these N24 Cahir to Limerick design update proposals as part of a four week long non-statutory public consultation process that began on October 25.
Eighteen maps showing the proposed active travel infrastructure and corridor changes and new Tipperary Town streets are available for the public to view on the Design Update No. 2 section of the N24 Cahir to Limerick Junction project website www.n24cahirlimerick.ie.
Hard copies of the design proposals are available to view in Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District offices in Tipperary Town.
Property owners along the land corridors for the active travel and N24 road corridor proposals have been notified of the design updates by post and invited to consult with the project team in person, online or through telephone meetings.
While the official public consultation period is just four weeks, Tipperary County Council Senior Roads Engineer John Nolan stressed the project team will still be available to consult with members of the public who have queries and concerns after that date.
