Swimming at Galtee Castle
During the recent summer weather in March, it was extraordinary to hear that a few local youngsters made their way up to the Castle Bridge to swim in the stream there. We hope the water wasn’t too cold! Word from a walker up there some days ago is that walking downstream from the bridge on the Tipperary side, you can still see the old steps that used to lead from the Castle down to the tennis court that existed there in Galtee Castle days.
Best of Irish Music
Eoghan O’Sullivan (once principal of Skeheenarinky School) and Bobby Gardiner need no introduction to readers of these notes. They were both in magnificent form along with Eoghan’s wife Luca (on concertina) and the other musicians at the fund-raiser for Baby Sergio O’Connor on the 18th March at the Fir Grove. Several people have described it as the best traditional music session they have ever attended. Well done to all the musicians and best of luck to Baby Sergio and family.
Bon voyage to all the local secondary school students who are taking trips to Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester and other places during the Easter Holidays. We hope it’s enjoyable for the students and not too stressful for the teachers!
Congratulations to Tom Maher, Geraldine Connolly and Hannah Fitzgibbon, the newly elected chairman, secretary and treasurer of the Skeheenarinky School Parents’ Association. Sincere community thanks to the outgoing officers, Liam Curtin, Susan Walsh and Helen Brennan for a job well done.
There is a case to be made for the declaration of the Galtee Mountains area to the north of Skeheenarinky and Kilbehenny as a national park. It is an area of outstanding beauty taking in part of County Limerick and part of County Tipperary. It is to the credit of the landowners that the area has retained its natural beauty over the centuries. All the stakeholders could benefit as well as the local economy, and it would also be a means of preserving that beauty for future generations.
