We are changing with the times we live in ...but we will continue to bring you the very latest news - as always

As and from next week ‘The Nationalist’ will change to a brand new compact-size
format as we move with the market
demands of today’s modern world. It will be, as the promotion says, “Easier to take up, harder to put down.”

The paper you are reading right now is therefore the very last issue of ‘The Nationalist’ to be printed in the larger broadsheet-format, a size which has served us excellently since our beginnings way back in 1890.

For almost a century and a quarter now this newspaper has been bringing its loyal readers the very best of up-to-date news and views, covering all the towns and villages in the region and all the major happenings and events, everything from news, courts, business, farming, the arts, sports, entertainment... and much more.

A quick glance around this page gives a snapshot of what ‘The Nationalist’ is all about and how it has progressed over the decades. Indeed once upon a time our front pages were for advertisements only - the front page of the first issue I worked on is reproduced below. It is a story in itself - how many of the businesses featured on that page have come and gone since. Life is evolving daily in every field and the media industry is no different to any other.

Our centenary in 1990 was marked with our special supplement - now a collector’s item. It comprehensively covered every aspect and walk of life of a proud people and region over many generations. We intend to do something special also for our 125th anniverary in 2015.

The other front pages covered give an idea of what we do, week-in week-out in this newspaper office. We bring you the news as it happens, not only the big headlines but the in-depth analysis behind those headlines. And we will continue to do that as ever in the new compact format.

As we move forward we will also be able to combine our excellent news coverage with our new website and also utilise social media to bring our loyal readers the very latest news as it happens.

Exciting times ahead!
