Lions Club seeks holiday nominees

Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club has begun preparing for its annual fundraising walk and golf classic.

Sub-committees were selected at the Club’s latest meeting to run the two events.

Members were also asked to nominate candidates for the Trabolgan Holiday week from June 10 to 17.

Club President Maria Madden received an invitation requesting as many members as possible to attend a meeting of Waterford Lions Club on Monday, April 4 at the Solas Cancer Support Centre. District Lions Club Governor Terence Mangan will be present.

Carrick-on-Suir Club has supported the Solas Centre.

President Maria Madden also presented a very positive report on the annual Lions Convention held in Clontarf Castle at the March meeting of the local club.

The members were pleased to hear details about the Club being awarded Irish Club of the Year and Maria receiving a personal award.

Treasurer John Brett presented a favourable report on the Club’s financial position.

Easter retreats

A Preparing for Easter presentation by Michael Melican IC takes place on Sunday, April 10 at Glencomeragh Retreat Centre from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

The afternoon will include Eucharist, exposition, prayers and garden walks.

Tea and coffee will be available. No charge. Donations only and all are welcome.

A five-day Holy Week Retreat takes place at Glencomeragh commencing with supper at 6pm on Tuesday, April 19 and finishing on Sunday morning, April 24. The presenter will be James Browne IC.

Carers meeting

The monthly meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Carers Support Group takes place next Tuesday, April 12 in the Nano Nagle Community Resource Centre from 11am to 1pm.

Flower show

Glasha Flower and Garden Society will host a Spring Flower Show next Sunday, April 10 in the Cardinal Brown Community Hall, Grangemockler.

Entries will be taken on the day between 10am and 12 noon.

The Flower Show will be open to the public from 2am to 4pm. Admission will be €2.

Fine Gael agm

Re-elected Fine Gael TD Tom Hayes and his constituency running mate Cllr Michael Murphy were the special guests at the agm of Carrick on Suir and District Fine Gael Branch in Ballyneale last week.

District Chairman Richard Lanigan welcomed all present and District Secretary Mary Blanchfield read the minutes of last year’s agm, which were approved.

Johnny Dowley congratulated Tom Hayes TD and Michael Murphy on the successful election result.

Carrick-on-Suir Town Councillor Margaret Croke joined in the congratulations and wished Michael Murphy well in the future.

Tom Hayes TD addressed the meeting and thanked all for their help and support during the election canvas. Michael Murphy also addressed the meeting and joined in the vote of thanks.

Officers elected for the coming year were: Chairman, Richard Lanigan; vice chairman, Paddy Power; secretary, Mary Blanchfield; joint treasurers: Michael Murray and Dick O’Shea; public relations officer, Geraldine Kelly; branch organiser, Martin Gannon.

New tourism guidebook

Carrick on Suir is well covered in the new edition of the Tipperary Tourism Guidebook that is being distributed at tourism promotion events worldwide.

Ormond Castle and Carrick-on-Suir Heritage Centre are included in the section ‘Castles and Natural Heritage’.

The Carrick-on-Suir area is featured in the ‘Walking and Cycling’ section, and the Clancy Brothers Music & Art Festival is also mentioned in the guide.

There is no mention of the Carrick-on-Suir in the book’s accommodation section but included elsewhere are the Whitechurch Riding School, Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club. Fairgreen Playground, Sean Kelly Swimming and Sports Centre, Carrick-on-Suir Library and the town’s Farmer’s Market.

Retirement Club meeting

Carrick-on-Suir Active Retirement Club’s fortnightly meeting takes place this Thursday, April 7 from 2am to 4pm in the Nano Nagle Community Resource Centre.

All retired people are invited to come along and enjoy light exercise, dancing, singing and friendship over a cup of tea.

Parishes’ news

A service of renewal for the Ministers of the Word readers in the four parishes in the Carrick-on-Suir pastoral area takes place this evening (Wednesday), April 6 at Glencomeragh Retreat Centre from 7pm to 9pm.

Eucharistic Ministers are invited to an information meeting at the same venue this Thursday, April 7 from 7pm to 9pm.

All parishes in the Carrick-on-Suir area congratulate those who received the sacrament of Confirmation recently and all involved in making it such a wonderful celebration for the girls and boys.

Easter draw

Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society’s Easter Draw has a prize fund of more than €3,500 up for grabs.

Tickets are on sale through Musical Society members or from the Strand Theatre. The draw will take place at the fundraising bingo night at the Strand Theatre on Good Friday, April 22 at 8.30pm.

Annie tickets

Tickets go on sale next Monday for the Muscial Society’s upcoming show Annie Junior at the Strand Theatre.

The show featuring 120 junior members of the Society’s Academy for Performing Arts will be staged next month.

Ticket booking opens at the Strand Theatre on Monday, April 11 at 11am.
