Swimming pool party with a Jaws theme

Clonmel Junction Festival will host a Jaws themed party in Clonmel Swimming Pool at 8.30pm on Saturday, 3rd November. The unique experience will include a screening of the classic film, cocktails and an elaborately decorated pool. Fancy dress is optional. Tickets at €10 each are now on sale.

Choral Society hosts Halloween Fancy Dress

As part of their fundraising efforts for the forthcoming production of The Wizard of Oz, St Mary’s Choral Society will hold a Halloween Fancy Dress on Bank Holiday Sunday, 28th October in the Clonmel Park Hotel. Music is by Marc, Ken and Eelco, followed by a disco with prizes for the Best Costumes. The evening will commence with a cheese and wine reception at 8.30pm. Tickets are just €15 and are available from Marian’s, the Clonmel Park Hotel and committee members.

Events to support annual Mayor’s Fund

Two events have been organised for the coming weeks to support the Mayor of Clonmel’s annual Christmas Relief Fund, which Mayor Billy Shoer is reviving this year. The first is the sponsored walk at 1pm (after 12 noon Mass) on Sunday, 28th October from St. Mary’s Church in Irishtown to Marlfield Village and back to town. Sponsorship cards are available from 56, Queen Street, Clonmel. This will be followed by a table quiz on Friday, 2nd November at 9pm in Liam Daly’s, O’Connell Street. Tables of four cost €20.

Whist at the Bridge Centre

Whist will be played at Clonmel Bridge Centre, Cashel Road on this Sunday, 21st October at 2.30pm. All are welcome.

Timmy Halley Soccer League

Clonmel Town FC’s annual soccer tournament, the Timmy Halley Memorial Winter League, will commence on either the last weekend in October or the first weekend in November. Games will be played on Friday and Saturday nights. The entrance fee is €100 per team and €50 per game. Any teams interested in entering the competition please contact P.J. South Tipperary Arts Centre

A reminder for all Folk and Trad music fans in South Tipperary that Jimmy Crowley’s gig in the South Tipperary Arts Centre in Nelson Street, Clonmel will take place on this Thursday night, 18th October, with support from Ken Horne and Eelco Beckers. Doors open at 7.15pm and admission is Adults €10, Students/Seniors/Unwaged €8 to be pre-booked as only a limited number of places are available. Drop into the Arts Centre or phone reception at 052-6127877 or Maureen at 086-8096823. This promises to be a great night.

There was a great attendance at the launch by artist Pat Looby, Fethard of the Tipperary Craft Gathering Exhibition on Thursday night last. The crafters involved are Rory Donohoe, Gold and Silversmith; Claire Molloy, Ceramics; Lindsey Critchley, Jewellery; Elaine Brett, Interior Designs and Camalia Shanahan, Textiles/knitwear. This is a superb exhibition beautifully curated by the artists themselves. The Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 12 noon to 4pm. Admission is free. The exhibition will run for a further two weeks. All craft displayed is for sale and commissions are accepted.

The Arts Centre is at present organising children’s classes for 5 years up to 9 years and Adult classes from after the mid-term break right up to the Christmas holidays. For the little ones there will be a magician and face painting on Saturday, October 27th in the Arts Centre. The cost for children is €7 while parents are free.

Keep fit for winter with road races

Clonmel Athletic Club is once again promoting its very successful 4k Road Race series. The series of six races gets underway on Wednesday, 31st October at 7pm. This series of races is an ideal opportunity for everyone to get and keep fit for the winter at their own pace in the company of other athletes, as these races cater for all levels of fitness from jogging to running. Indications are that this year’s series will attract a great entry so everyone is asked to come early and enter. Entries will be taken at the Brothers of Charity car park, Silversprings, from 6.15pm onwards each night. The club requests members to come forward and help with the marshalling of these races. There was a very high standard in the Area 27 Humorous Speech and Table Topics competitions involving competitors from Cashel, Clonmel and Thurles. There were six speeches - My Favourite Book from Pat Kinsella; Go For Gold from Tommy Kennedy; Who am I? from Tom Russell; Chalk and Cheese from Ann O’Sullivan; Fifty Shades of Yellow from Fidelma Collins and Summer, A Sports Car and No Love from Pat O’Donnell. Congratulations to Pat Kinsella of Clonmel, Tom Russell of Thurles and Fidelma Collins of Cashel Toastmasters who came first, second and third respectively.

In Table Topics the topic that popped up was If you could go back to a sporting event in time what would it be and why would you pick it? The six contestants were Pat Kinsella, Declan Ryan, Tommy Kennedy, James Prendergast, Fionnuala Greene and Tom Russell. Congratulations to Tom Russell of Thurles who came first, James Prendergast of Clonmel who was second and especially to Fionnuala Greene of Cashel Toastmasters who achieved third place on her first outing in the area competition. Contest Chair Suzanne Dunne conducted proceedings in a very assured way and made certain that all the participants were put at their ease. Area 27 Governor Paul Sheridan acted as Chief Judge with Timer, Jim Keating; Counter, Nell Cooney and Pat Fahy was Sergeant at Arms.

Best of luck to those who go through to represent the area in the Divisional Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests, which will take place in the Talbot Hotel, Carlow on this Sunday, October 21. Clonmel Toastmasters will meet as usual at 8pm on Thursday, 25th October. Anyone can come along and if interested contact Mick White on 086-4038587.

Peaks Club

Both walks for this Sunday, 21st are in the Comeraghs and the leaders are 10am, John Morrissey and Nicky Murphy, while the noon walk will be led by Ruairi O’Caislean, Anthony Doyle and Donal Murphy. Come with all the gear as winter has arrived and it is time for the gloves and hats.

Sunday’s walking was in the Knockmealdown Range and the weather was kind. The noon walk was led by Niall Quinlivan and covered 17 kilometres with spectacular views. John Byrne led the early walk, which had a poor turnout, and covered 23 kilometres of mountain and climbing everything on the eastern side of the Vee Road. The Meets Secretary will be posting the new list of walks leaders, as the present list ends this month. Leaders who are nominated to lead, if unable to do so, should arrange a replacement leader in good time. The Mourne away trip is almost finalised and Jim and Nuala are leading the walks. If you want a place get in touch as soon as possible to ensure a great weekend away. South Tipp Art Group

Junior South Tipp Art Group (STAG) closes next Saturday for this current session. Only a few places are available in the Primary Section (9 years to 6th Class) for the Christmas Session, which commences on Saturday, 10th November and runs up to and including 15th December. Adult STAG members are coming in their droves to the Tuesday Adult Art sessions at 7.30pm in the Art Room, Infant School, behind Ss Peter and Paul’s Primary School, Kickham Street, Clonmel. New members are always welcome on Tuesday nights – just contact the Organiser for information. A semi- permanent exhibition of some of the STAG Adults Artwork is on display in the Studio upstairs in the South Tipperary Arts Centre, Nelson Street, Clonmel at the moment and is open to the public during Arts Centre hours, Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and on Saturday from 12 noon to 4pm. A reminder to all artists in South Tipp and beyond that there will be an oil/acrylic weekend workshop with Geraldine Folan, Galway on Saturday and Sunday, 24th and 25th November, which will be based loosely on Monet’s style. Contact the Organiser at 086-8096823 for details and booking.

Shoebox Appeal

The Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal is looking for volunteers for South Tipperary and surrounding areas to collect and drop shoeboxes and help with the appeal in October and November. Anyone interested in volunteering their time should contact Sarah Cullinan at 087-6353566.

The cafe at Morton Street, Clonmel is open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 12.30pm. Tea, coffee, scones and snacks are available daily.

Monday - Crafts at 10am, Memoir Writing Workshop on the first and third Monday of each month. The Book club meets on the last Monday of each month.

Tuesday - Family Tree Genealogy at 11 every week. Storytelling at 11 every week.

Wednesday - Art and paper craft.

Friendly Yoga on Fridays from 1.15 – 2.15 (small charge).
