There was much excitement this month when six St. Nicholas Club boxers made their debut in the big ring at the Wexford League held in the Sacre Coeur Boxing Club, Enniscorty.
There was a lot of tension amongst the Boy 1 category boxers preparing to enter the ring in competition for the first time.
Steven Laza at 31 kilos gave an exhibition of boxing to beat Adam Byrne from the Na Fianna Club.
This was the start they needed but sadly it was the Club’s only success.
Conor Whelan was beaten by Joe McHale from St Aidan’s Boxing Club on a split decision and he looks a good prospect for the future.
Dane Finn had a toe-to-toe battle with John McDonagh of St Bridget’s Boxing Club and was, as were the coaches, disappointed to lose on another split decision.
Daniel Marcs worked hard but was unable to contain a strong and skilful Timmy O’Reilly of Tramore B.C.
Cian Hayes boxed Josh Myton Hogan in a thriller but couldn’t come to terms with his taller opponent and lost on a unanimous decision.
Lee Keane (48kgs) fought Byron Bennett, St. Bridget’s B.C. The contest was stopped as it was very mismatched, which left a sour taste in all the St Nicholas Boxing Club members mouths.
Regardless of the results, the St. Nicholas B.C. officials present saw a great future for the club with the manner in which the young boxers gave their all.
Credit must go to the club coaches for the way the boys had been prepared and the Club believes many of the results can be reversed before the League is over.
