This year’s Famine 1848 Walk took place on Saturday, July 28, and once again was very well attended. The Walk was led by the Parish Priest of Ballingarry, Fr. Derry Quirke. This Annual Walk commemorates all those who died during the Great Famine and the 1848 Rising which took place in Ballingarry in the middle of the Famine. The Rebel Leaders were transported to Van Diemen’s Land. The Walk began at the National Flag monument in The Commons and proceeded to the Famine Warhouse. The distance of 1 ½ miles was covered at an easy pace. This is the seventh year of the event which has become a parish occasion. At the end of the Walk, Fr. Quirke addressed the assembled crowd in the yard, after which light refreshments were served in the open air. A big thank you to the local branch of Civil Defence for their assistance in marshalling the event. They continue to give their community great service voluntarily.
