The present week has been designated Catholic Schools week. The week is devoted to our schools and the renewal of our commitment to the children as we highlight the distinctive character of our catholic schools. In this group we include all our parish primary schools and the post primary schools that serve the young people of our parish. In this vein we note that the preparation of children for their First Holy Communion in May is already in hand.

Our congratulations to Seamus Ryan, Modeshill and Ann Marie Curtin, Ashford, Co. Limerick who were married recently.

On a sadder note our condolences go to the families of Willie McGrath, Modeshill; Aibhne Bergin, M.P.S.I. (our resident chemist) and Tom Molloy (PAWS) from Co. Kildare, all of whom passed away recently.

This week marks the traditional end of Winter in Ireland with the coming of Spring on 1st February the feast of St. Brigid. Thursday will be Candlemas Day. In the very olden days people were supposed to be able to eat their three meals from Candlemas Day onwards by the light of the day, no candles! Friday will be the feast of St. Blaize, the patron saint of throats. The traditional blessing of throats will take place in St. Michael’s at the 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Masses. However don’t be deceived that Winter is over, crows by tradition start to build on March 1st. On Saturday last, January 28, a large gathering of rooks or jackdaws were seen/heard in the bell tower of St. Michael’s Church.

Our local group had a meeting in the G.A.A. meeting room on Wednesday, January 25. Public representatives who attended were Cllr. Eddie O’Meara and Cllr. Pat English representing Seamus Healy T.D. Cllr. O’Meara informed the meeting that a pedestrian crossing would be in place at the church/car park within the next two months. Other safety measures were discussed and the group are seeking a meeting with Mullinahone Tidy Towns committee and the Community Council. Both these organisations are involved in the betterment of our village and it is felt that unity in strength is the best policy.

New season begins, following what was a very successful 2011 the spotlight now shifts to 2012 and hope we can be as successful on the field of play. Following our adjourned A.G.M. the following people will be responsible for our teams in 2012. Pat Heffernan from Limerick will be managing our senior hurlers; Michael Scott, Junior Hurling; Thomas McNamara, Junior and Senior Football; Declan Mac, U/21 hurling and football; John Leahy, Minor hurling and football. Tributes were paid to Jackie Bolger and Johnny Kennedy by Chairman, John Croke for delivering such success to the club in 2011 in the form of South and County titles. All players need to pay their membership immediately. Our U/21 footballers will be first into action in February.

Following the success of Eoin Kelly as Tipperary Senior hurling captain the county waited to see who would succeed him. We were thrilled to see Paul Curran appointed for 2012. This is a great honour once again for our club and especially for Paul and we wish him every success for the coming year. We hope to see Paul and Eoin back in Mullinahone next September with Liam McCarthy once again.
