The Mid Tipperary Drug Initiative has long established links with the national Family Support Network and is starting a group in Tipp Town on the first Tuesday of each month (starting Tuesday 4th Sept) and Cashel on the first Wednesday of each month (starting Wednesday 5th Sept).
If you or someone you know is trying to cope with addiction in the home, the benefits of Family Support can:
l interrupt the negative dynamic of drug use within the family
l help family members look after their own needs
l help families help the drug user to make constructive choices
l help families to reinforce the work of the service agencies
l enable families to be a resource to their own communities
The Family Support Network is an autonomous self-help national organisation that respects the lived experiences of families affected by drugs in a welcoming non-judgemental atmosphere. The Network primarily supports the development of family support groups and networks throughout the island of Ireland. Through the work the Family Support Network raises awareness of the difficulties faced by families in coping with drug use while recognising the important role that families play in supporting recovery of the drug using family member.
The overall aim of the Family Support Network is to improve the situation of families coping with drug use by developing, supporting and reinforcing the work of family support groups and regional family support networks, by working for positive change in policy and practice and by raising public awareness about the problem of drugs for families and communities.
Presently the network supports over 90 Family Support Groups and 107 Family Resource Centres throughout Ireland.
Family Support can be offered on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting. The model of family support that the Network advocates is peer family support. This is where a number of people with a common problem in our case living with drug use, come together to share their experiences.
If you would like to attend a group in your area please phone Carmel on 0876188075 or visit www.fsn.ie for more information.
