Six boxers from the St Nicholas Boxing Club paid their second visit to Enniscorthy last week for a further round of the Wexford League.
First in action was Steven Lazui, who fought J. McCale from the St Aidan’s Club.
Steven, who had been successful the previous week, could not come to terms with his opponent and lost on a unanimous decision. Daniel Marco met a very smart opponent Adam Byrne also from the local club. He tried hard and landed some good punches but lost on a majority decision.
Nathan Bolger, St. Aidan’s BC, was much taller than his St Nicholas opponent Cian Hynes and despite his best efforts Cian lost on a unanimous decision.
St. Nicholas’ first success came through Bernard McDonagh, who gave a good display and easily overcame Nathan Long from Our Lady of Fatima Club. Bernard with his style and heavy punching should have a successful League.
St Nicholas’ Lee Keane had a close encounter versus Liam Hoyes also from the Our Lady of Fatima Club and to the disappointment of his coaches lost on a majority decision.
However, Lee’s performance was a big improvement on his previous bout and the Club looks forward to more of the same in his next fight.
Scott Murphy was the St Nicholas Club’s final boxer of the day. He gave a very good performance to win, beating Eoin Long with a little to spare. Overall, this was a good day’s work for the St Nicholas Club, which could easily have come home with four wins.
Training continues at a feverish pitch and with numbers growing, the Club has to divide the training schedule. The U- 10s now train from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and the older boxers train from 7.30pm to 8.30pm
While this is a strain on the coaches, the Club thanks them for their co-operation and looks forward to Sheriff Paddy Hanlon returning after illness.
