Newcastle Foroige Club are holding a Childrens’ Christmas Party on Sunday, December 16, in Newcastle Community Hall from 2pm to 4pm. There will be music, games, party food and more! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is €2 per child / €5 per family.


The Festival Committee are holding a Monster Christmas Raffle with prizes including Festive Hampers, voucher for fresh turkey, sweet hamper and tins of sweets and biscuits. Prizes are on display in the museum beside McCarra’s Hardware. Tickets cost €1 per line and are on sale in the local shops. The raffle will take place on Thursday, December 20, at 8pm in the Community Centre.

The annual general meeting of Newcastle GAA club was held on Friday, December 7. The chairman, Michael Keating welcomed all present to the meeting. The chairman thanked Eamon McGrath, who resigned as secretary, for his work over the previous five years and welcomed Sharon O’Dwyer back to the position of secretary. Treasurer William Devaney and assistant secretary Joan O’Dwyer presented their reports on the events of the past year highlighting the success of the Junior A Footballers on winning the South title. A large number of players were present at the meeting and they were congratulated on their success. Juvenile club secretary, Caroline Kelly, presented the achievements of the juvenile teams to the meeting and the meeting agreed to incorporate a juvenile Ladies football team into the club. The chairman, in closing the meeting, thanked all who helped in any way in the running of the club in the past year and especially to the Lotto Committee for their fundraising efforts.

Membership - Adult membership for the coming year is as follows; €30 if the membership is paid on or before March 31, and €40 after that date

Social - A Social to present medals to the Junior A footballers that won the 2012 South final will be held in Cahir House Hotel on Saturday, January 19. More details to follow later.

Cups - Over the years, the club has presented a number of cups for tournaments and matches. The location of some of these cups is not known at present. If anyone has any information in relation to these cups, please contact any of the officers of the club.


On November 28 the AGM of the Knockmealdown Active group was held at Ardfinnan Hall. The attendance on the night was excellent, showing the determination to succeed in all the communities involved in this new and pro-active group looking to promote tourism, culture and commerce across the towns of Ardfinnan, Ballyporeen, Clogheen, Goatenbridge and Newcastle.

The group has been responsible for a number of very innovative and successful ventures across the Knockmealdown region in its short existence including the Tour of the Knockmealdowns bicycle run, a well-attended Dawn Chorus event at Glenleigh Gardens, a tremendously successful Demo & Dine event in Cahir House, a very well supported Halloween walking event in Newcastle, an excellent promotional evening at the Old Convent in Clogheen, the ongoing Historic Graves project, a recently completed Walks Awareness Training Programme, continuing development of Kildanogue Duck ponds as a recreational asset and designation of a range of loop and linear walks along the Tipperary side of the Knockmealdown Mountains. The group has also been the catalyst for the formation of a number of sub-groups such as the Knockmealdown Walking Club, the South Tipperary Cycling Club and is continuing a supporting role in Éigse in Newcastle.

The officers elected on the night were Kevin O’Donnell - Chairperson, Marian O’Dwyer – Vice Chairperson, Seamus Butler - Secretary, P.J. English – Treasurer, Jim O’Brien – Assistant Treasurer, Diarmaid Condon PRO. There were also a number of members from each community co-opted onto the committee. Others will be co-opted as activities in the group progress over time so please do approach on of the local members if you have any ideas you would like to propose to promote the region.

Chairperson, Kevin O’Donnell, thanked the members of the group for their excellent efforts during 2012 and said that there would be many more unique and innovative projects undertaken across the towns at the foot of the Knockmealdowns in 2013.
