Cashel Cllr Tom Wood has called on Tipperary County Council to take a pro-active approach under the Derelict Sites Act against owners of lands and properties who fail to maintain and present them in a reasonable manner.
Using Cashel, he said that while great strides had been made by the tidy towns committee, civic groups, and the Council itself a small number of property owners, some absentee landlords, simply neglected their properties.
“While some were only in need of a wash down or a coat of paint, others in prime locations were semi derelict and this was unfair to adjoining residents and those paying commercial rates,” he said.
The Council should consider introducing a by-law to deal with the more minor issues of neglect. Director of Services said that the matters raised would be given consideration, adding that the Council was responsible for dealing with derelict sites under legislation.
